Farming rarely runs nine to five, and a battery helps bridge the gap between when you generate and when you use power. Battery storage lets you capture daytime solar for the early-morning or evening milking, or store cheap off-peak power for when you need it.

Tax treatment for farm businesses

The tax position can improve the numbers considerably, but it needs to be claimed correctly. Solar is classed as a special rate asset, so it does NOT qualify for full expensing, a point often misreported.

For most farm businesses, the key relief is the Annual Investment Allowance, giving 100% relief on the first £1m of qualifying capital spend, which covers the great majority of farm installs. Companies may also claim a 50% first-year allowance on qualifying spend above the AIA. Eligible new rooftop solar also benefits from a business rates exemption running until 2035, though agricultural buildings often already receive rates relief.   • Ground-mounted arrays, which generally face stricter planning rules than rooftop systems
  • Listed buildings and structures within their curtilage
  • Land within the South Downs National Park, the High Weald or other protected landscapes across Sussex, Kent and Hampshire
  • Larger installations above certain thresholds

Grid connection in rural areas

Rural connections deserve early attention, because country networks can be more constrained than urban ones. Picture a mixed farm in Kent fitting a 100kWp system across two barn roofs for around £90,000. On the South Coast, that array might generate in the region of 92,000 units a year. With dairy refrigeration and grain drying using much of it on site, say 75% self-consumed at 30p, that is roughly £20,700 saved each year, plus export income on the surplus.

In this example, the system pays for itself in around four to five years, then continues generating for two more decades. A holding with an even better daytime load match would see a shorter payback.
